A study on the clinical practice satisfaction of dental hospital by dental hygiene students

Abstract
The contents of clinical practice, its term and its estimation are the factors which have influence upon the students¢¥ satisfaction about it. Thorough survey and analysis of them will give us basic data for more effective clinical practice.
Data for this analysis were gathered by the questionnaires of 263 students randomly selected students who are in the third grade in dental hygiene in Kwang ju and Cholla province and have experienced clinical practice for more 6 weeks in dental hospital attached to the dental college.
The obtained results were as follows:

1. The clinical practice satisfaction ratios of all the respondents were 17.5% satisfied, 32.3% so so and 50.2% dissatisfied.
2. It was appeared that the more satisfied with their major, the more satisfied with the clinical practice(p (0.0001).
3. In the aspect of clinical practice contents, 72.6% of the_ respondents answered most favorably in the recognition of the meaning of each department, 63.8% responded the interest in their major and understanding about it were improved, and 58.9% replied they came to understand the patients. Only 21.0% became to take pride in dental hygienist through the clinical practice. 87.8% of them showed negative response in the contents of the practice because their practice was limited simply assist.
4. The most difficult thing in the clinical practice was 41.8% the lack of communication between dentist and dental hygienist.
5. The satisfaction ratios of the clinical practice estimation were 17.5% satisfied, 47.1% so so and 35.4% dissatisfied.
6. It was resulted that the more satisfied with the clinical practice contents and its estimation, the more

satisfied with the clinical practice.
7. The first factor influencing affirmatively in the satisfaction of clinical practice was its contents, and the second was clinical practice estimation. However, the term of clinical practice had negative influence.

The results show us that in order to improve the satisfaction of clinical practice, it is necessary to make students recognize the importance of clinical practice through pre-clinical practice in regular curriculum and educate them about each department before the practice. Besides, more effective programs of clinical practice and teaching methods of it should be developed.
